Beyoncé Releases the Lion King: The Gift Album

Beyoncé has released the track list for her companion soundtrack to “The Lion King,” titled “The Lion King: The Gift.”

On the 19th of July 2019 renowned singer Beyoncé released an album known as the Gift which drew inspiration from the Lion King movie. Beyoncé says the album is a love letter to Africa; therefore the featured artists were selected from African countries and some African American artists.

The icon had lastly released an album in 2016, before she announced the release of the Gift which was a surprise to many. The album consists of fourteen sound tracks with Beyoncé appearing on ten of the songs, in which she solos on four of them. One being the lead single from the Lion King movie, “Spirit”

Among the special appearances in the album are her husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy who is only seven years old. Ten African artists were selected from West and South Africa to appear on the album, namely; Tekno, Mr. Eazi, Yemi Alade, Tiwa Savage, Burna boy, Shatta Wale, Wizkid, Busiswa, Moonchild Sanelly and Salaitel.

East African countries did not shy away from expressing their disappointment after the release of the African artists that were to set to collaborate with Beyoncé on the album. Most people felt that East African content was greatly shunned despite the fact that Lion King Movie greatly revolved around Swahili, with the popularly “Hakuna matata” phrase.

Beyoncé is however yet to comment on the issue and it’s possible she might not be speaking about it either. My favourite song from the album will have to be “Brown skin girl” ft. Beyoncé, Blue Ivy, Wizkid and Saint Jhn. The song is a reminder to all girls of colour that they are enough and beautiful just the way they are. It emphasises on being happy and content in your skin whether or not the world agrees.

What a great way to empower and inspire women of colour. Thank you Queen Bee for that number!
