Edi Mūe Gathegi (born March 10, 1979) is a Kenyan-American actor, writer, producer and a five-time pinnacle Emmy nominee. Edi was born in Eastlands, Nairobi, Kenya but raised in California. When he was young, his family moved to the United States, settling in the Bay Area town of Albany, CA. It’s an undeniable fact that no Kenyan actor has landed more roles in Hollywood than Edi. From playing vagrant vampire Laurent in The Twilight Saga film series to the mutant Darwin in X Men to a doctor in the medical drama, House (that airs on Showmax). One of his most memorable roles that are recognized by most of his Kenyan fans has to be the deft Cabal leader Mr Solomon, in the crime thriller The Blacklist.
In 2016, Edi also starred in the American drama series Start Up, playing the role of a Haitian drug lord who is the team’s muscle. The show follows the emergence of GenCoin, a brilliant yet controversial tech idea centred on digital currency. The idea gets incubated on the wrong side of the tracks by three strangers who don’t necessarily fit the mould of tech entrepreneurs and a crooked FBI agent who will go to any lengths to take them down. The first two seasons premiered on Sony’s Crackle, but on May 4th 2021, all three seasons of the tech-thriller were released on Netflix, earning a place on Kenya’s Netflix’s Top 10 for weeks.
There is no scarcity of remarkable Hollywood characters that the trouper hasn’t shown. He has unapologetically conquered the Hollywood film industry and he’s inspiring many future performers back home. In an interview with Jeff Koinange, Edi revealed that it’s tough working in Hollywood because there’s success and failure at every turn. Therefore, one has to learn how to navigate and develop the skin to persevere. The actor believes there’s room for everyone to make it to the top, given they put in the work and believe in themselves.
Edi has also joined the upcoming third season of the acclaimed Apple TV+ sci-fi series, For All Mankind, as series regular. Gathegi will play Dev Ayesa, a charismatic visionary with his sights set on the stars.
