Netflix First Kenyan Series 'Country Queen' Premieres On Netflix

Kenya’s first homegrown Netflix series, Country Queen is now premiering on Netflix marking the beginning of a significant investment in African film by the streaming company.

Country Queen is the first Kenyan licensed Branded Series to premiere on the streaming giant Netflix.

Set in contemporary Kenya, Country Queen is a family drama series that tells the story of ordinary Kenyans fighting against a corporate power that threatens to destroy their homes and lives. The series focuses on the issues of land grabbing and exploitation, and how these factors impact the lives and relationships of the main characters, their families and communities.

Melissa Kiplagat stars as Akisa and plays as a Nairobi IT girl from a sleepy village who now leads a comfortable but complicated life in the city. Her dark past and complex relationship with the powerful and ruthless Sibala family sets in motion a string of events with rippling consequences.

Akisa is forced to return home after a mining company discovers gold on their land and threatens the existence of her village; she is caught between two worlds, returns home and face her painful past and save the village from the ordeals of the mining company.

This is a David vs Goliath story that pits ordinary Kenyans against a large power that threatens to destroy their homes. The issues of land grabbing and exploitation form the tapestry against which the fractured personal lives and relationships of our main characters play out. The fight for land becomes a fight for redemption, truth and facing the consequences of one’s own choices.
