The Old Guard 2: What to Expect

Six months after Booker and his colleagues part ways, Quynh — the first immortal that Andy found — re-emerges in a Paris apartment after being trapped underwater, in a coffin, for 500 years.

Now that critics are raving about The Old Guard, will Netflix move forward with The Old Guard 2? The action thriller centers on a team of seemingly immortal warriors who change the course of world history by protecting humanity. Directed by Gina Prince-BythewoodThe Old Guard released in July 2020.

The Old Guard is based on the eponymous graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández. Charlize Theron stars as Andromache of Scythia (“Andy”), the leader and oldest member of the titular group. The film adaption follows her attempts to save and protect U.S. Marine Nile Freeman (KiKi Layne), who is killed in action but then comes back to life. Because The Old Guard has the ability to connect with peers through dreams, they’re able to identify Nile and educate her about their mission. The big twist, however, is that members of The Old Guard aren’t technically immortal. The Netflix film co-stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, and Luca Marinelli.

The final act of The Old Guard features Andy and company squaring off against a pharma CEO named Derrick (Harry Melling). Meanwhile, former CIA agent Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) tries to weather the storm, as he knows how valuable The Old Guard can be to modern society. In the narrative background lurks an ancient warrior named Quynh (Veronica Ngo), who has literally been trapped in an underwater coffin for 500 years (and plays a role in a final act reveal). If The Old Guard 2 appears on Netflix, it will likely continue these plot threads.

The Old Guard 2 Status

Overall, The Old Guard has received mostly positive reviews thus far, and appears to be a proper summer hit for Netflix. Theron’s star appeal alone will make the film popular, while the directorial acumen of Prince-Bythewood (Love & BasketballBeyond the Lights) ensures a quality viewing experience. Netflix may not immediately greenlight The Old Guard 2 in the coming weeks or months, but a sequel does seem inevitable. After all, the second volume of the source material — “Force Multiplied” — debuted in December 2019, and Rucka, who penned the screenplay adaptation of his comic book, seems confident about a second film, stating “There is a complete three-part story that can be told and, God willing if it’s a success, Netflix comes back and says, ‘Hey, let’s do it again'” [via Looper]

The Old Guard 2 Release Date

Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlize Theron, Luca Marinelli, and KiKi Layne in The Old Guard

Netflix will most likely assess viewing numbers for several months before officially announcing The Old Guard 2. A sequel will undoubtedly happen, but the streaming service’s algorithm data will indeed factor into the pre-production process. Assuming that director Prince-Bythewood and screenwriter Rucka reprise their behind-the-scenes roles, The Old Guard 2 will presumably release in 2022 or 2023. Because of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, a 2023 premiere seems likely.

The Old Guard 2 Storyline

Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne in The Old Guard

The Old Guard ends with Merrick being defeated, and Andy becoming mortal. After being set-up by Booker, Andromache of Scythia is less than pleased and banishes her friend from the team for a full century. Enter Copley, who is recruited to help The Old Guard operate quietly in the The Digital Age. Over the years, members of the team have been seen in photos of notable events, so they’ll need to find new ways to stay under-the-radar. Six months after Booker and his colleagues part ways, Quynh — the first immortal that Andy found — re-emerges in a Paris apartment after being trapped underwater, in a coffin, for 500 years.

Ngo will be key to The Old Guard 2’s storyline. The Vietnamese actress has been a popular action star for years in her native country, and recently portrayed Hanoi Hannah in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. So, expect Andy and Quynh to have a complicated relationship upon reuniting in The Old Guard 2, as there’s much to resolve about the past. Based on the the final moments of The Old Guard, it seems like Quynh could be the sequel’s primary villain, if only because of her menacing demeanor. Then again, how is she supposed to act after spending half a millennia with her thoughts at the bottom of the sea? So, there could be some misdirection at work, which would mean that Andy and Quynh will team up against an unknown baddie in The Old Guard 2 on Netflix.
